Monitoring by Child Rights Committee of Gujara Municipality to ensure Child Labor in Brick Kilns

Monitoring by Child Rights Committee of Gujara Municipality to ensure Child Labor in Brick Kilns

To prevent and eliminate child labor in hazardous sectors, systematic monitoring of eight brick kilns in Gujara Municipality was conducted under the leadership of the Deputy Mayor (Vice Chairperson) in close coordination with the Municipal Child Labor Monitoring and Action Committee. Brick kilns are recognized as high-risk workplaces for child labor, particularly among children from marginalized and migrant families, making regular oversight essential to ensure child protection and legal compliance.

The monitoring initiative aimed to assess working conditions, verify the presence of children in labor activities, and ensure adherence to national child labor laws and child rights standards. Joint monitoring visits were carried out by municipal representatives, members of the action committee, and relevant stakeholders, demonstrating strong political commitment and institutional ownership by the local government. During the visits, kiln owners and workers were sensitized on the legal prohibition of child labor, the negative impacts of hazardous work on children’s health, education, and development, and their responsibilities under existing labor and child protection regulations.

Particular attention was given to identifying children living with kiln worker families who may be at risk of engaging in labor. The monitoring team interacted with families, assessed children’s access to education, and reviewed arrangements related to schooling, safety, and basic services. Where potential risks were identified, the committee provided immediate guidance to kiln owners and parents, emphasizing preventive measures and referral to appropriate municipal and social services.

The involvement of the Deputy Mayor ensured high-level leadership and accountability, reinforcing the municipality’s zero-tolerance stance on child labor. The Municipal Action Committee played a critical role in documentation, follow-up, and coordination, ensuring that monitoring findings translated into concrete actions. This included linking vulnerable families to social protection schemes, education support, and awareness programs to address the underlying causes of child labor.

Overall, the monitoring of eight brick kilns strengthened enforcement mechanisms, improved awareness among employers and workers, and enhanced coordination among municipal stakeholders. The initiative contributed to creating safer work environments, protecting children from hazardous labor, and reinforcing Gujara Municipality’s commitment to child labor–free communities through proactive governance and sustained monitoring.
