A Successful Case Story of Durga Maya Ghalan
Family Background:
Durga Maya Ghalan is a 37-year-old woman from Chadrapur- 6 Jhanjhani tol is a single mother of two children a son and a daughter. She studied until grade 5. She was entirely dependent on her husband. After the marriage, Durga's life took a devastating turn when her husband married another woman. After that, she was physically mentally, and economically abused by her husband. After that, she and the children were abandoned by her husband. Due to poverty, she was unable to sustain her life. She has to look after the children as well. She used to work in other houses and fields to sustain her life.
Action Intervention:
She is a member of the Jagarup Empowerment Centre. She expressed her emotions and shared that she does not always get work so there is difficulty in sustaining her life. She stays with her brother but the brother's economic condition is also challenging. Although her brother has given shelter to the children and Durga.
Support Provided:
RDC Nepal staff identified her as a GBV survivor and assessed her needs. Following the assessment, she participated in 5 days of SIYB training and provided livelihood support worth Rs 50,000. She was a cart and other items to start her own business. She now runs a successful street food selling Chatpate, and other items in the cart. She is happy with her work and thanked RDC Nepal for the support.
“I am quite happy to have received the support from RDC Nepal. I was clueless and hopeless before. But now I see a ray of hope. My neighbors are also supporting me. I want to expand this business and add more items in the future.’’
She earns Rs 1500- 2000 per day and saves Rs 100 per day in finance. Earning money, becoming independent, and looking after the children have given her a lot of courage.
The livelihood support from RDC Nepal has changed her life. She is now more determined to work and build a path to success.
