Case story of Rina Chaudhary

Family Background:

Rina Chaudhary is a 36-year-old woman hailing from Chandrapur-9 Ramtol. She has one son and one daughter in the family and stays alongside the in-laws.  She is a single mother. Coming from a low economic background, she studied until grade 10. After that, she got married for 10 years.  After the death of her husband during the coronavirus pandemic, Rina faces several challenges. her brother-in-law harassed her. She was accused of her husband's death by her mother-in-law. She was physically, mentally, economically, and socially harassed.

Action Intervention:

She is a member of the Janalahar empowerment group. She participated in the class and while running the class regarding gender-based violence she felt uncomfortable and emotional about sharing her feelings. Later, the other members revealed that she is a victim of gender-based violence. 

Recognizing her situation, the RDC staff created a safer space to talk to her. She shared that she has been a victim of sexual violence. and she is hiding her emotions from everybody. She tells us that she has nowhere to go now and look after her children. She aspired to start her own business but needed support to make it happen.

Support Provided:

The RDC Nepal introduced her to livelihood support and provided grocery items for NPR 50,000; she was happy about it. She was interested in opening a grocery shop where she could add other items. She was provided with grocery items and livelihood support.

I am much happier after receiving the livelihood support, this has empowered me and inspired me to do something on my own and economically strong. I have now learned after the classes about GBV issues. I know where to seek help if I face anything in the future. ‘’

Now, she is continuing her business and is happy that she has support and the opportunity to earn money for her children. Her in-laws are also supporting her and helping her manage the grocery shop. She has expanded her shop and added snack items, too. Through the support, she is confident that she is becoming financially strong.
