Tuition Center established in Brick Kiln of Gujara Municipality by RDC Nepal

To minimize child labor and promote access to education among children living and working in brick kiln areas, a tuition center was established in Gujara Municipality with the active support of local youth groups. This initiative was designed to address the educational gaps faced by children from brick kiln–working families, who are among the most vulnerable to child labor due to poverty, migration, and limited access to formal schooling.

Brick kiln–affected children often experience irregular school attendance or complete dropout, as they are frequently engaged in labor to support family income. Long working hours, seasonal migration, lack of learning support, and poor living conditions significantly hinder their educational progress. Recognizing these challenges, the tuition center was established as a community-based learning space to provide academic support, basic literacy and numeracy skills, and child-friendly learning opportunities.

The tuition center offers regular classes focusing on core subjects such as Nepali, Mathematics, and English, along with homework support and revision of school lessons. Flexible class timings were adopted to accommodate children’s schedules and gradually reduce their involvement in labor activities. The center also serves as a safe space where children can learn without fear, pressure, or exploitation.

Local youth groups played a crucial role in establishing and running the tuition center. Youth volunteers were mobilized and oriented on child rights, child labor laws, and child-friendly teaching approaches. Their involvement strengthened community ownership and ensured sustainability of the initiative. As role models within the community, the youth helped motivate both children and parents to prioritize education over labor and reinforced positive attitudes toward schooling.

Beyond academic learning, the tuition center integrates awareness sessions on child rights, the harmful impacts of child labor, health and hygiene, and the importance of education. Recreational activities, including games and creative exercises, are also conducted to support children’s psychosocial well-being and make learning enjoyable. These activities help rebuild children’s confidence, reduce stress, and encourage consistent participation.

The establishment of the tuition center has contributed to noticeable improvements in children’s learning outcomes, school readiness, and attendance in formal schools. Teachers and parents have observed positive changes in children’s behavior, motivation, and academic performance. Importantly, the initiative has helped reduce the number of hours children spend working in brick kilns, thereby lowering their exposure to hazardous labor.

Coordination with schools, ewgwrg3local authorities, and community members ensured effective identification of children most at risk of child labor and promoted referral of out-of-school children to formal education. The tuition center also complements municipal efforts to eliminate child labor and strengthen child protection systems.

Overall, the tuition center established in brick kiln areas of Gujara Municipality stands as a practical and community-driven intervention to minimize child labor. Through educational support, youth engagement, and child rights promotion, the initiative has contributed to safeguarding children’s rights and building pathways toward a safer, educated, and more hopeful future.
