RDC Nepal supported 95 farmers with climate-smart practices, technical guidance, and sustainable technologies to improve resilience, productivity, and secure livelihoods.

RDC Nepal successfully initiated and implemented a comprehensive Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) support program benefiting 95 farmers with the objective of enhancing agricultural productivity, resilience, and sustainability in the face of climate change. The initiative focused on equipping farmers with improved farming techniques, practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and structured CSA training, ensuring that farmers were able to adopt climate-resilient practices suited to local conditions.

Under this support, farmers received hands-on training and on-farm demonstrations that emphasized the principles of climate-smart agriculture, including efficient resource use, soil health improvement, and climate risk reduction. RDC Nepal prioritized participatory learning approaches, enabling farmers to observe, practice, and adapt CSA technologies directly in their own fields. This approach strengthened farmers’ understanding of how climate variability affects crop production and how appropriate technologies can mitigate these risks.

Key CSA practices promoted through the program included mulching, plastic tunnel farming, and the use of organic manure. Mulching techniques were introduced to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and reduce evaporation, especially during dry periods. Plastic tunnel technology was promoted to protect crops from extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, cold waves, and heat stress, while also extending the growing season and improving crop quality. The use of organic manure helped improve soil fertility and structure, reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers, and supported environmentally friendly farming systems.

In addition, RDC Nepal emphasized efficient irrigation systems, particularly drip irrigation, to address water scarcity and improve water-use efficiency. Farmers were trained on the installation, operation, and maintenance of drip irrigation systems, which helped ensure targeted water delivery to crop roots, minimized water wastage, and improved crop health. This practice not only reduced labor and input costs but also contributed to sustainable water management at the farm level.

An important strength of the initiative was the provision of field-level technical support by Junior Technical Assistants (JTAs). JTAs conducted regular field visits, closely monitoring crop conditions and providing timely advice on crop health, nutrient management, and pest and disease control. Through this continuous technical backstopping, farmers were able to quickly identify and address emerging challenges related to pests, diseases, and seasonal variations. The personalized guidance increased farmers’ confidence in applying CSA practices and encouraged sustained adoption beyond the project period.

The CSA support program initiated by RDC Nepal resulted in improved farming practices, better crop management, and enhanced resilience among participating farmers. Farmers reported increased awareness of climate-smart techniques, improved problem-solving capacity, and greater preparedness to cope with climate-related shocks. Overall, the initiative contributed to strengthening local agricultural systems, improving livelihoods, and promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices, aligning with RDC Nepal’s commitment to inclusive, resilient, and climate-responsive rural development.
