A successful case story Sunaina Ram
Family Background:
Sunaina Kumari Mahara is a 32 years old woman from Chandrapur -8 Chamar Tol. She lives with her husband and three daughters. She can read and write. Her husband stays at home. She sometimes does the labor work to support the family. Due to their low economic background, it was hard to sustain their life. Her husband is an alcoholic and often beats her when she goes to work at others' houses. She used to live with her in-laws before but when she gave birth to three daughters she was thrown out of the house. She was also forced to have multiple abortions based on gender discrimination.
Action Intervention:
As a member of the Mahalaxmi Empowerment Centre, Sunaina began participating in the sessions. During the sessions, she expressed her feelings about her situation in GBV classes. After joining the classes, she was able to speak and share. Before, she was hesitant to share her feelings. She expressed that she wanted to do something on her own and be economically dependent.
Support Provided:
The group referred her to RDC Nepal for livelihood support. After assessing her needs, she expressed interest in selling fruits. Recognizing her potential, she was provided with a Cart and fruits worth Rs 50,000 as livelihood support. After earning money from the support, her husband now supports her in cooking, managing the cart to the market, and looking after the children.
“I am happy that I can earn money and be independent, I can now look after my children and household expenses through the earnings. I can live my life happily now “
She earns Rs 2000 to 3000 per day selling fruits on a sunny day. She plans to expand her business by adding more fruit items in the future. With support from RDC Nepal, Sunaina transformed her life, becoming resilient and empowered and supporting her family.
