Sumaya Khatun, a 30-year-old woman from Rajpur Municipality Ward-3, is a mother of three daughters and one son. She currently lives with her parents after being abandoned by her husband and in-laws due to her husband’s alcohol addiction. In this difficult situation, Sumaya has become the main person responsible for supporting her children as well as caring for her elderly parents. Her parents are poor and physically weak, which prevents them from going outside for work. As a result, the responsibility of managing the household and meeting the daily needs of the family falls entirely on Sumaya.
Sumaya is a right holder of the GARVA Project and received a sewing machine as income-generating (IGA) support. Using this support, she earns a small income by sewing clothes for people in her community. Occasionally, she also works as a daily laborer when work is available. Despite her hard work, the income she earns is still not enough to support the large household. Due to limited income, the family often faces food shortages.
The situation becomes even more challenging during the holy month of Ramadan, when families prepare special meals for Sehri and Iftar. For Sumaya, managing food for her children and parents during this time is particularly difficult due to financial constraints.
In this challenging situation, the Ramadan Food Pack support provided on 11 March 2026 brought great relief to Sumaya and her family. The food pack included essential food items such as rice, lentils, cooking oil, sugar, salt, and grams. This assistance helped ensure that the family had enough food to prepare Sehri and Iftar meals during Ramadan.
Sumaya shared that receiving the food support during Ramadan significantly reduced her family’s immediate financial burden. “During Ramadan it was very difficult for me to manage both food and clothes for my children. After receiving the food support, I felt relieved because now I could use the little money I earn to buy some clothes for my children,” she explained.
Because her family is large, the food support helped ensure food security for about one month. The assistance not only helped them meet their nutritional needs but also allowed them to observe Ramadan with dignity and peace of mind.
Sumaya and her family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to RDC Nepal and IR Nepal for their generosity and support. This assistance has brought hope and relief to a vulnerable household struggling to rebuild their lives.
